GIIPC A Hit Among Photographers

FOCUSAs many as 125 participants took part in the Garuda International Indonesia Photo Contest (GIIPC) Workshop held during the FOCUS expo at the Jakarta Convention Center in Senayan, Jakarta, Saturday (6/3).

FOCUSParticipants listened and chimed in as GIIPC jurors Jan Dekker, Goenadi Haryanto, Agus Leonardus; Garuda Indonesia Senior Marketing Manager Prasetyo Budi and the first-place winner of last year’s GIIPC Gathot Subroto shared their experience on being a part of the three-year running GIIPC.

“If you are going to take part in the GIIPC, then you must make sure that you read the directions very carefully,” Goenadi said, giving emphasis to the words “very carefully”.
Jan said future contestants should avoid digitally manipulating their photos, saying that the jurors can spot digitally manipulated photos easily.

Prasetyo dropped a surprise announcement during the workshop, revealing that the GIIPC 2010 would offer a new prize that was bigger than the prizes offered in earlier competitions.

“Just wait for the day we hold the upcoming 2010 GIIPC,” Prasetyo said, smiling.
Meanwhile, Gathot told contestants that winning the GIIPC was as much about luck as it was about skill, saying that it takes a particular experience to find that extremely good but different picture of a tourism spot that has been framed thousands of times.

Gathot won for his black-and-white and misty depiction of Borobudur temple during the dusk.

“It was hard to find a new angle to taking Borobudur because that temple has been framed thousands of times,” he said.

FOCUSParticipants who asked questions received t-shirts printed with the winning pictures from last year’s GIIPC.
At the end of the workshop, the committee handed even bigger prizes to the 125 participants, including amusement park vouchers and return tickets for Jakarta - Singapore and Jakarta – Yogyakarta.

The GIIPC is a prestigious photo contest held by Indonesia’s flagship carrier Garuda Indonesia offering tens of millions in cash prizes. The contest first started in 2007 and has continued to show increasingly tremendous response during its three-year run, as proven by the rising number of international participants: from 4,000 from 20 countries in 2008 to 6,170 from 30 countries in 2009.

As another token of appreciation to our participants and jurors of GIIPC, Garuda Indonesia also held several Photo Exhibitions in various places such as within the terminals of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Malls and other public venues in the hope of developing the art of Photography in Indonesia.
