Garuda Indonesia

It’s Final Time

Steps Out onto the International Stage
Congratulations! Here Are the Finalists & the Winners

We’re back for the second time, full of improvisation and innovation! This competition to seek the best photographers through unique screening methods is now wide open. You will also notice that the name has changed; the first year, it was the Garuda Photo Competition (GPC), and it’s now called the Garuda Indonesia International Photo Contest (GIIPC), since the photographers will compete and display their skills on the international stage.

GIIPC 2008 also now has an international jury panel of ten, comprising Agus Leonardus, Arbain Rambey, Goenadi Haryanto, Jan Dekker, Jerry Aurum, Makarios Soekojo, Oscar Motulloh, Prijastono Purwanto from Indonesia, as well as Minoru Masujima from Japan and Tan Lip Seng from Singapore.

During the registration period from 15 March to 31 May 2008, GIIPC 2008 received 13,877 photos from 3,911 participants in 21 countries – Indonesia, Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Bangladesh, India, the United States, Germany, Burma, Spain, Iran, Austria, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Taiwan, and South Korea.

GIIPC 2008 is employing an online system both for the registration stage (uploading photos) through www.garudacompetition.com and for the judging by the ten jurors to select 427 photos, which was done from 9 to 13 June 2008. They then conducted a further strict screening stage to narrow the field down to 20 photos (and 20 finalists) on 18 June 2008; these can be seen on the following pages.

The 20 finalists consist of 12 participants from Indonesia and eight from abroad: two from Singapore and one each from Vietnam, Burma, China (Hong Kong), Australia, India, and Malaysia.

Apart from the 20 finalists and their photos, the jury also presented two special awards: “Best Landscape,” won by Olivier Ralliere from France for a photo entitled “Welcome to Paradise,” and “Best Culture/People,” won by A.K. Moe Moe from Burma, with a photo entitled “Smiles 2”. Each received a certificate, but will not be taking part in the Hunting Trip in Indonesia as the final stage.

During the final stage, from 25 to 30 August 2008, the 20 finalists will be placed in four groups and sent to four designated regions of Indonesia before later assembling in Bali.

Prior to the selection of the finalists, GIIPC 2008 also conducted several other activities this year to introduce and market the event: the GPC 2007 Photo Exhibit at FOCUS 2008 at the Jakarta Convention Center from 12 to 16 March; a Photography Workshop with the themes “Indonesia the Beautiful” by Tan Lip Seng and “Tips and Tricks for Participating in Photo Contests” by Goenadi Haryanto at the Jakarta Convention Center on 15 March; and Media Photo Hunting at Walahar Reservoir, Karawang, West Java.

Thanks to these activities and the intensive efforts of the organizing committee, we have reached the time to announce those who have been selected to compete as finalists in the unique, prestigious event, GIIPC 2008.

Best of luck, and we’ll see you in the finals!
